background

In addition to the official hackathon activities, Polkadot also supports individuals or teams who want to organize hackathons, and will also provide technical resources and personnel support. For example, Polkadot team members can demonstrate or conduct seminars on the technology Yes, to help participants use it faster.

andWith the gradual stabilization of Polkadot's ecological development, the official plans to launch Polkadot Hackathon global series of activities, dedicated to bringing the cutting-edge technology of blockchain to more regions

On October 22, 2021, the first stop of the Polkadot Hackathon global series of activities kicked off in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC). Polkadot, built using the Substrate development framework, provides developers with strong security, scalability and innovation, and is also the best opportunity for developers to convert ideas into code.

and

Polkadot Hackathon North America is the second event in the Hackathon global series. This Hackathon focuses on Substrate, Polkadot, and Kusama

Whether it is an experienced blockchain developer or a novice who is not familiar with the ecosystem, they can participate in the construction of the blockchain, and the opportunity to communicate with the Polkadot team is very rare for starting a new project.

So with the successful conclusion of the Polkadot North American Hackathon, what innovative projects have been born in the Polkadot ecosystem?

Overall Winner: XCM DOT Autostake

firstOn September 18, 2022, Polkadot announced that the XCM DOT Autostake project developed by the Entity 54 team won the grand prize in the Polkadot North American Hackathon. The project automatically stakes DOTs from any parachain by using XCM, which solves the problem of users having to manually manage their DOT asset holdings on multiple parachains when they want to stake DOTs for Liquid DOT in the Acala ecosystem .

Staking is a mechanism by which participants lock up Crypto assets for a period of time to help support the operation of the blockchain and earn income.

XCM DOT Autostake guides users through the process of automatically staking DOT for Liquid DOT from any parachain to Acala through a simple UI

, and it is also very convenient to return from Liquid DOT to DOT. Secondly, the UI also provides users with the ability to transfer multiple assets between the parallel chain and the relay chain on the Polkadot ecosystem.

XCM DOT Autostake makes extensive use of the Cross-Consensus Message Format (XCM), including two vertical messaging transport protocols: Upward Messaging (UMP): This allows parachains to send messages to their relay chains. Downward Messaging (DMP): This allows the relay chain to pass messages down to one of its parachains.

Interface and Experience

First place: MoonbridgeMoonbridge is a DApp based on the Web3 network. It is both a bridge aggregator and a cross-chain bridge transaction browser. It has various bridging options for bridging funds with other EVM-based chains. Some of these blockchains include Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, Avalanche, Optimism, and more.

picture

The protocols that can be used for these transactions are Synapse and Multichain. Thanks to its intuitive design, users are able to connect assets in a straightforward manner.

Moonbridge features include selecting the maximum amount of assets to be bridged, alerts when a transaction is submitted, and a direct link to transaction details on the explorer

. This explorer allows users to view the status of their cross-chain transfers.

Transactions can be entered into the search bar to find specific transactions. Data displayed includes transaction hash, token type, value, source and receiver chains, address, date, protocol, and whether the status was successful or still pending.

The transaction hash is a link to the local explorer of the network where the user sent the token, and it also includes features such as GLMR's real-time price, number of bridging transactions, annual transaction volume, and average bridging time. There is no doubt that Moonbridge has achieved the goal of creating valuable products for the Polkadot and Moonbeam ecosystems. In the future, Moonbridge plans to continue to add bridges to further expand the number of users by building and trading on the Moonbeam network.

Second place: Subsocial Substrate StackExchange

All posts, replies, answers are stored in IPFS and Subsocial Parachain,

also,This means that the connections (followers/followers) established by users here can be transplanted to another social application based on Subsocial

And it makes it easier to tip others, too, for example, to someone who helps you by answering your questions.

  • Subsocial Substrate StackExchange is built using nextjs with typescript, while most Web3 interactions are made using Subsocial SDK and talisman-connect's wallet connection.

  • also,

  • The reputation system can also implement indexing services through Subquery

  • Due to time constraints, Subsocial Substrate StackExchange also plans to implement the following features:

  • SSR content for better SEO.

  • Better reputation system.

Connect to Subsocial offchain (or Subsquid or Subquery) to display better content filtering (e.g. search questions, filter by tags, etc.)

More Tokens in Tip List

responsive design

Better text area customization and functionality

Subsocial Substrate StackExchange has made great achievements in this hackathon. Developers can connect Subsocial SDK and Polkadot api (get the balance of each listed parachain), and provide complete typescript support, so that future development Easier in terms of caching, fetching data, mutating and invalidating queries. This allows the page to update accordingly after any changes are made.

Third place: Polkadot Point of Sale Terminal

So what they need to do is advertise on social media and use the store logo that they accept Nodle Cash as payment and it will drive traffic to the store and increase sales

picture

The retailer defines the Nodle/Fiat conversion rate and sets up the Nodle wallet using the Nodle Cash App or Nova wallet. During the transaction, the clerk enters the amount to be paid, and the app calculates the amount in Nodles and displays a QR code.

Customers make payments using their mobile wallets, and the app detects when payments have been received and prints receipts and reports, which can be used on mobile phones or point-of-sale terminals.

Polkadot Point of Sale Terminal is a native Android application that accesses the Nodle blockchain using Subquery Network, which provides APIs for balance indexers and transaction history of designated retailer wallets.

pictureDuring a transaction, Nodle POS creates a websocket to onfinality.io and registers state_subscribeStorage to detect balance updates.

Retailers use a non-custodial wallet app (Nodle Cash Wallet or Nova Wallet) to create their Nodle public key and register the public key with the Nodle POS app.

Since Nodle currently has no transactions, the retailer has set a fixed conversion rate in the app that is used to calculate the payout amount. Nodle's exchange rate will be used in future versions of the Polkadot Point of Sale Terminal.

this project

Future plans will also expand to other point-of-sale terminals and add language support and functionality, and establish connections with other Substrate-based chains and develop IOS versions

DAOs and Governance

First place: Diora Network

Diora Network is an incentivized smart contract parachain that utilizes an advanced PoSM mechanism with double verification and randomization to secure the network. The main goal of Diora is to foster a diverse and sustainable range of cross-chain applications by incentivizing and rewarding developer empowerment and rewards for building on the network.

More specifically, Diora is building an efficient and fully decentralized consensus protocol.

Diora Network is built with Substrate, which natively supports EVM, WASM, and multi-layer sharding scaling solutions.

The Diora parachain can be integrated into the network itself, rewarding developers according to the value and influence of the DApp

Diora's native token is more than a fee and stake token. Instead, it will be the first token on the EVM to drive the outcome of EVM governance.

Second place: Rooster DAO

Among other things it can serve as a tool to determine the future economic outcomes of the three main players (developers, users and validators).

After winning the first place in the Polkadot North American Hackathon DAO and Governance track, the Diora team said it will show more information about its overall concept and Diora network plan.

After Diora is stable enough, the team will start to let users join the Diora chain and expand its community and social influence.Second place: Rooster DAO

Rooster DAO is an investment fund managed as a DAO that only focuses on investing in the Polkadot ecosystem.

Rooster DAO aims to incentivize a large number of users to participate in DAO governance. Each member in Rooster DAO has an evolved NFT, and the evolution of NFT represents the member's participation in investment proposals or proposal voting.

Through active participation, users' images gain color and upgrade.

Through these two mechanisms, Rooster creates a horizontal structure where proposals are strongly incentivized through meaningful financial rewards and visual representations of effort.

picture

Rooster DAO uses Ink instead of solidity to write its business logic and is able to interact/evolve RMRK NFTs trustlessly instead of using centralized solutions. The Rooster development team found some inspiration from existing investment DAOs on Ethereum, such as The Lao or Dao5.

The team believes that Polkadot has great room for investment, so it only focuses on making good investments in the Polkadot ecosystem. The team believes that the Polkadot ecosystem is becoming one of the fastest-growing ecosystems and may become a new standard in this field.

picture

After winning the second place in the Polkadot North American Hackathon DAO and Governance track,

The Rooster team stated that it will use XCM to build a real multi-chain DApp, and use aUSD as the base currency for minting NFT

Third place: Shivarthu

Shivarthu is a blockchain-based decentralized governance and financing system with the goal of establishing democratic elections and funding different local projects or jobs.

Shivarthu is protected by game theory to minimize corruption and provide optimal price discovery for projects.

Almost half of the work on the Shivarthu project is currently complete. Shivarthu is also built using Substrate, and its development team said that Substrate is a very powerful framework with a high learning curve, but it takes some time to learn and implement features such as loose coupling, Runtime API, and RPC.

After winning the third place in the Polkadot North American Hackathon DAO and Governance Track, the Shivarthu team stated that it will establish a funding framework to fund local projects.

Web3 and ToolsFirst place: PostThread

PostThread is a Web3 social media application that uses blockchain economics to encourage users to post quality content and manage the platform.

Existing social media is loyal to advertisers rather than users, and users create most of the content on these sites without being properly rewarded.

The PostThread team believes that,

Using blockchain technology will not only allow content creators to be paid more efficiently, but it will open up a world of possibilities where a user can actually choose the type of social media experience he wants

PostThread is a social media app first and an encryption app second.PostThread hides all aspects of encryption from users because most people are not interested in that, but it is important that they have the ability to control their data if they choose to.

Users can control their assets and tokens at any time. Additionally, all data is stored publicly on the blockchain or hosted on IPFS, so it cannot be abused by centralized entities.

PostThread believes they can give users more control by encrypting data and allowing users to provide keys to whoever they wish to share their data with.

In May of this year, the Web3 Foundation announced that it had reached a formal agreement with Project Liberty

, will cooperate to implement DSNP's decentralized social network protocol for the first time on Polkadot.

Their goal is to create a protocol layer that is not controlled by companies and puts power back in the hands of users. PostThread is built on Project Liberty's social media parachain protocol (MRC).

Every day, users are awarded tokens based on their user and social scores. Users are scored based on their contributions to the site, such as posting quality content, moderating the site by voting, or linking to their Web2 social media accounts (such as Reddit).Their social score is strictly based on who is following them. Using social graph theory, the importance of users in the entire social graph can be determined.

Combining these two scores allows for a fair daily distribution of tokens and encourages users to contribute, curate, and engage with the community.

PostThread believes that having a protocol layer is the key to a thriving decentralized social media, because any value created by PostThread can be captured by any other social media that subsequently emerges, and vice versa.

This increases competition and collaboration, which is always in the best interest of consumers and users.

  • PostThread thinks this will promote open source projects and let users contribute to the site themselves

  • The best way to beat multi-billion dollar social media empires is to embrace the open, free and sharing economy of our users.

Second place: Next Step

The management audience has little "direct" interaction with the modeling, modification, and execution of the process, the developers, the technology-oriented material (smart contracts implemented in programming languages, etc.), and the long change development lifecycles in between.

picture

BPMN (Business Process Modeling and Notation) has been stable for about a decade and is widely used by enterprises such as SAP (SAP), Oracle (Oracle) -- not to mention AWS's extended workflow service Step Functions.

Note: BPMN business process modeling and notation, Business Process Modeling Notation, is a common and standard language for process modeling, used to draw business flow charts, so as to better understand business processes and interrelationships between departments .

It provides a graphical representation of business workflows that anyone can easily understand, facilitating business process analysis and business process improvement. Complex business processes and workflows are easier to understand when represented graphically.

picture

Next Step aims to implement a parachain that executes business models, mainly targeting business management audiences. It can be integrated with existing smart contract ecosystems, such as parachains that support EVM, through precompiled contract interfaces to: check process status - execute activities - allocate contracts. In this way Next Step will invite more non-technical users to enter the blockchain world, support better communication between developers and customers of DApp development business, and possibly reduce the development audit and deployment time and cost of business DApp.

Third place: SamaritanOS: A DID-based Web3 Cloud Access Layer

  • SamaritanOS is a DID-based Web3 cloud access layer, which describes a living container composed of 1s and 0s (a "means to an end"), which can be accessed by any account on the chain, and whose state is determined by the user's Interactions are uniquely created and shaped.

  • This project was inspired by the many scandals and abuses of power in large corporations.

  • SamaritanOS allows the user to control his online data and activities as he likes

  • Short-term goals of SamaritanOS

Add the application to the state of Samaritans and build the minimal structure for the application to access the state of Samaritans.

postscript

Revoke access to the application by submitting a transaction. The network prototype is still in the first wave (of three waves) and has yet to be completed. The second wave will focus on getting things right and loose coupling of many things. Then the third wave will focus on robustness. Native will start after Web MVP.

postscript

The final grand prize is the combination of Staking and XCM. Polkadot is a huge PoS chain, its Staking economy will be an important part of its ecology, and

The combination with XCM can open up users and assets on each chain, clearing a major obstacle for Polkadot's future Staking economy to become popularOn the interface and experience track, the Polkadot ecology is really too big, just like a city developed too fast in the early days, but some necessary infrastructure functions are still missing.

And this track project is making up for it bit by bit in multiple directions, including more bridge use cases, not limited to bridges within the Polkadot ecosystem, but linking to other EVM ecological chain use cases, which makes The Polkadot ecology can be better expanded beyond Polkadot.

There are also forums that support Substrate development, allowing developers to communicate and communicate more conveniently; there are also solutions that support the use of DOT for payment, providing more usage scenarios for DOT. There is still a long way to go to improve the usability of the Polkadot ecosystem.

In the DAO and governance track, we saw the idea of a new smart contract parachain,

The Polkadot ecology is actively exploring how to solve practical problems. It is no longer just related to DeFi and chain games on the pure chain. The practicability of Polkadot is gradually being reflected.

The Polkadot network is booming and ecological projects are emerging one after another. The Polkadot Ecological Research Institute focuses on Polkadot ecological trends and grasps current trends. Reply to [Daily] to get the latest daily news summary of Polkadot ecology.
