Polkadot and Kusama, built on similar codes, still have their own independent governance and community

"It is our entry-level article on Polkadot from zero to one. We try to start from the most basic part of Polkadot and provide you with a comprehensive understanding of Polkadot. Challenges, but we hope that through such efforts, everyone can correctly understand Polkadot, and also make it easy for people who don’t know Polkadot to quickly grasp Polkadot-related knowledge. Today is the 40th issue of this column, let’s learn about Polkadot and Kusama. How are separate networks different?

In order to ensure that projects can have a more stable state before going online on the Polkadot network, almost all projects will be tested and iterated on the Kusama network.

but,but,

Kusama and Polkadot are still independent of each other, and Gavin previously stated that Kusama is not just a test network, Polkadot and Kusama are independent networks with different priorities

Kusama is wild and fast; ideal for bold experiments and early-stage deployments. Polkadot is more conservative, prioritizing stability and reliability.

After all, there is a difference between cousins.

What do these two networks have in common?

Kusama was released as an early version of the same code used for Polkadot, meaning they share the same underlying architecture: a multi-chain, heterogeneous sharding design based on Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS).

The two networks also share key innovations such as on-chain governance, fork-free hot-swap runtimes, on-chain upgrades, and interoperability across Consensus Messaging (XCM).

Polkadot and Kusama's governance is designed to be decentralized and permissionless, allowing everyone with a native token (DOT for Polkadot and KSM for Kusama) to have a say in how the network operates

So, over time, these networks will independently develop, merge or diverge, depending on the decisions of their respective communities.

main difference

The two networks also have different circulating supplies.

speed

speed

The first key technical difference between Polkadot and Kusama is that Kusama modifies governance parameters to allow for faster upgrades.

Kusama is four times faster than Polkadot, and token holders can vote on referenda within 7 days, followed by an 8-day enactment period, after which the referendum will be enacted on-chain.

This means that stakeholders need to be active and alert if they want to keep up with all the proposals, referendums and upgrades, and validators on Kusama often need to be updated within a short period of time

On Polkadot, voting lasts for 28 days, followed by a 28-day enactment period.

This does not mean that the Kusama blockchain itself is faster, in terms of block times or transaction throughput (these are the same on both networks), but rather means that the time between governance events is shorter, e.g. Propose new referendums, votes and issue approved upgrades. This allows Kusama to adapt and evolve much faster than Polkadot.

Teams wishing to run parachains need to bond tokens as collateral. Kusama's binding requirements may be lower than those of Polkadot.

Applications

Polkadot is and will be the primary network for deploying enterprise-grade applications and those high-value transactions that require banking-grade security and stability.

The initial use case for Kusama is as a pre-production environment, a "canary network". It seems like a testnet to the average developer, what's the difference? What exactly does canary mean?

The canary is a bird: In the past, coal miners would place canaries in coal mines as a way to measure the amount of toxic gas present.

Likewise, canary testing is a method of validating software without harming people and birds by releasing it to a limited number of users, or perhaps an isolated environment.Releases on Kusama can be thought of as Canary Releases. These releases are usually staged.

In the early days of Kusama, the network was not only used to innovate and test changes to parachain candidates, but also served as a proof of concept for Polkadot’s sharding model

In a typical blockchain development pipeline, Kusama will sit between a "testnet" and a "mainnet".

As you can imagine, building first on Kusama allows the team to test in a real, fully decentralized, community-controlled network with less risk of problems or bugs than Polkadot .

Many projects will maintain parachains on both networks, experimenting and testing new technologies and features on Kusama before deploying them to Polkadot. Some teams will decide to just stay on Kusama, and this could be where we see some exciting experimentation with new technology.

Projects that require high throughput but not necessarily bank-like security, such as some games, social networking, and content distribution applications, are particularly suitable for this use case

Kusama may also prove to be an ideal environment for experimenting with ambitious new ideas and innovations in areas such as governance, incentives, monetary policy, and DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations).

In this way, not only will we be able to see how these new technologies and features will perform under real-world conditions before they are introduced to Polkadot, but the teams that have already deployed to both networks will also gain insight into how their own technology will perform under these upgrades .

looking to the future

Ultimately, Kusama and Polkadot will continue to exist as separate networks with their own communities, their own governance, and their own complementary use cases, although they will continue to have a close relationship and many teams will likely deploy applications on both networks .Welcome everyone to join our Telegram of Polkadot Ecological Research Institute: https://t.me/polkadot_eri
