"Polkadot Knowledge Graph" is our entry-level article on Polkadot from zero to one. We try to start from the most basic part of Polkadot and provide you with a comprehensive understanding of Polkadot. Of course, this is a huge project. Engineering is also full of challenges. Today is the 31st issue of this column, introducing Polkadot. What role will Westend, the card’s permanent testnet, play.
On August 23, 2019, the Kusama network was officially launched. It has code similar to Polkadot, faster governance parameters, and lower barriers to entry. This means that Kusama is more aggressive than Polkadot.
So in the early days, many people thought that Kusama was just Polkadot’s test network, but as the Kusama network gradually matured, its own value was reflected. The official has repeatedly reiterated that Kusama is a pioneering network, a mature public chain with a faster innovation speed than Polkadot, and will officially join the Polkadot ecosystem as a parallel relay chain network in the future.

What is Westend?
Compared to the Alexander testnet (Polkadot's fourth proof-of-concept chain), Westend more accurately simulates the interaction with Kusama or Polkadot, allowing teams and developers to build and deploy parachains, or try Polkadot on the testnet Governance, Staking, Nomination and Validation functions.

Why use Westend?
For all purposes, Westend is a testnet. No KSMs or DOTs are required to interact with Westend, so it's the perfect testbed for validators to test validator setups without worrying about being penalized by Slash before deploying to Polkadot or Kusama, and then testing anything with parachains as well.

Certain parameters of Westend are the same as those of Polkadot, such as the session length and governance formulation cycle. It's very similar to how you interact on Kusama or Polkadot.

As a pre-production deployment chain for Kusama and Polkadot's relay chain upgrade and parachain launch, Westend will still be as close as possible to Kusama in terms of code and storage.
