Earlier this week, on Thursday, August 6th, we launched our testnet for testing parachain functionality: Rococo. The Rococo testnet has integrated Substrate's Cumulus extension and HRMP functions.
Cumulus: An extended sub-protocol of the Substrate blockchain framework, which is used to more easily build a parallel chain runtime on Polkadot.

HRMP: full name Horizontal Relay-chain Message Passing, horizontal relay chain information transmission
On Rococo, developers can use this testnet to:
Register the blockchain based on the Substrate framework as a parachain and communicate with the relay chain.
Write the logic on the chain based on the parachain, and communicate with each other through the relay chain and other parachains.
The Rococo testnet will operate as a PoA network with Sudo keys controlled by the Parity Technologies parachain development lead. Rococo will include 3 parallel chains: the parachains can send information to the relay chain, and multiple parallel chains can communicate through the relay chain.
PoA Network: Proof-of-Authority mining Buffalo: a closed permission network stage (permission network), mainly for the initial test.

In order to match the latest version of Polkadot and maintain stability, the Rococo testnet will be reset many times. Rococo currently does not guarantee stability and completeness of functions. The HRMP protocol was also reset many times while we were fixing bugs and upgrading the codebase. Some full features like XCMP and Hot-swapping are not activated yet. These features will be on the agenda as more Cumulus extensions are deployed on Rococo in the future.
Cross-Chain Message Passing Cross-chain information transmission: Allows direct parachain-to-parachain information transmission.

Hot-Swapping: Realize the replacement or addition of network systems without suspending, shutting down, or restarting the system. Substrate, the architecture tool for building Polkadot and Kusama networks, can develop hot-swappable runtimes, so as to realize upgrades on the chain without forking.
Rococo allows developers to "register" their own Substrate-based blockchains as Polkadot's parachains.
Substrate is a blockchain development kit that enables other blockchain networks to interoperate as Polkadot parachains.
Rococo launched as a Proof of Authority (PoA) network under the leadership of Parity Technologies. The testnet will start with three parachains.
