In recent days, speculation surrounding zkSync’s imminent token issuance and airdrop has been rampant.

Based on the above information, the main basis for this round of zkSync airdrop speculation focuses on zkPorter. So what exactly is zkPorter? Why is the launch of zkPorter linked to zkSync’s token?
The debut of zkPorter can be traced back to August 2020. Matter Labs proposed this new expansion technology based on zkSNARK at that time, hoping to help Layer 2 achieve more obvious expansion effects through more flexible data availability (DA).
In a 2021 article explaining zkPorter in detail, Matter Labs mentioned,Rollup can only provide a linear growth expansion effect because all data still needs to be broadcast to all complete nodes. However, in order to meet the massive user growth, the industry needs to achieve an exponential growth expansion effect.
To this end, Matter Labs has designed a new expansion solution whose security is between zkRollup and Optimistic Rollup, but can achieve over 20,000 TPS, which is the protagonist of this article, zkPorter.
Like zkSync Era, which uses the zkRollup solution, zkPorter also supports EVM, and their contracts and accounts can also interact seamlessly.
The core difference between the two is that,zkPorter will place data availability off-chain (outside of Ethereum), thereby liberating the restriction caused by data needing to be broadcast to complete nodes, and also significantly reducing the gas cost required for transactions - thousands of transactions can be packaged into one update and released to the main network.
Judging from the definition of Layer 2 in the early years, zkPorter should be classified as Volition in terms of solutions, and is more suitable for high-concurrency projects that are not economically suitable for the Ethereum mainnet or traditional Rollup.
The key design is here,In order to ensure the stability of zkPorter, the data availability of zkPorter needs to be guaranteed by zkSync token holders (herein referred to as guardians). Guardians can use zkSync tokens to participate in PoS proofs and track the status of the zkPorter side by signing blocks to confirm the data availability of the zkPorter account.

So, when will zkPorter be launched?Alex himself mentioned in February this year in response to community questions that after the implementation of EIP-4844, as the potential impact of this upgrade on changes in transaction fees needs to be observed.Since EIP-4844 (Proto-danksharding) will be implemented in the Dencun upgrade on March 13, it can be expected that zkPorter will not be too far away.
Finally, it needs to be emphasized that, like the majority of the community, we do not know the specific currency issuance and airdrop plans of zkSync. The above-mentioned launch time of zkPorter only has a one-way range and cannot provide a more accurate guess.
Based on security and stability considerations, Matter Labs will only advance relevant actions after everything is ready, so it is not ruled out that there will be a period of observation and testing after EIP-4844.
