Arbitrum and Optimism are the two most exciting ecosystems born in the L2 wave last year. Both are competing for users, developers and funds. So who wins?

Let's make a simple comparison🧵

Both Arbitrum and Optimism have seen significant increases in daily active addresses over the past 6 months, bucking the trend of the general crypto market.

Among them, the number of daily active addresses of the OP ecology increased by 462%, and the number of daily active addresses of the Arbitrum ecology increased by 304%.

Related to this is the number of unique contracts deployed during the same period, where Arbitrum has a clear lead.

This includes anything from dApps to NFT minting. During the period, the number of Arbitrum ecological contracts increased by 333%, and the number of OP ecological contracts increased by 13%.

Both protocols have shown impressive growth in terms of number of transactions, with Arbitrum holding a clear lead. The significant drop in Optimism’s daily transaction count is related to the end of its NFT incentive program at the end of January.

According to the data provided by L2 Fees, the cost of sending ETH on Optimism is twice that on Arbitrum.

What is the composition of the protocols of the two L2 ecosystems?

Divided by contract activity, the top agreements in the Arbitrum ecosystem are:

  • $GMX ( 4.3% )

  • $VELA ( 9.6% )

  • $GNS ( 6.8% )

  • SUSHI ( 12.4% )

  • UNI ( 7.8% )

The top protocols of the Optimism ecosystem are:

  • thirdweb ( 29% )

  • VelodromeFi( 7.4% )

  • perpprotocol( 9.8% )

  • Uniswap ( 8.6% )

  • Collab_Land_ ( 7.2% )

In terms of funds, how do the two perform?

Currently, the Optimism ecological stable currency fund is 633 million U.S. dollars, and the Arbitrum ecology is 1.3 billion U.S. dollars.

Over the past 6 months, Arbitrum’s stablecoin liquidity has increased by 16%, while Optimism’s has decreased by 8%.

Despite the poor market conditions, both Optimism and Arbitrum ecosystems are thriving, including the number of users, TVL, and the number of ecological projects.

We have seen a huge change: native projects will be more popular on these L2, rather than projects such as Uniswap and Sushi that appeared in the Ethereum L1 ecology before.

Who do you think is more promising between Optimism and Arbitrum?
