Like most Polkadot ecosystems, Moonriver is a parachain deployed on Kusama, and Moonbeam is a parachain deployed on Polkadot.

Recently, the Moonriver ecology has gradually emerged. Like most Polkadot ecosystems, Moonriver is a parachain deployed on Kusama, and Moonbeam is a parachain deployed on Polkadot. A lot of people are talking about the difference between Moonriver and Monbeam just as much as they were talking about the difference between Kusama and Polkadot.

At first glance, Moonriver and Moonbeam seem to be the same project, but if you look carefully, you can find the designer's differentiated positioning of the two networks, which will lead to different applications and communities on the two chains. Now, let's see what the difference is!

First of all, Moonriver is Moonbeam's early experimental parachain network on the Kusama network. Moonriver is more community-oriented, and most of the MOVR is distributed to the community through Kusama crowd loan rewards (30% of the total supply).

In the future, MOVR will generate more distribution through the liquidity incentive plan (10% of the total supply) and community incentives.

With the gradual improvement of the deployment of Moonriver and Moonbeam, the underlying update of the network will be reflected on Moonriver first, and undergo a series of tests and experimental verifications in the real economic environment on the chain. When validation is complete and tests pass, deploying the project to Moonbeam should go much smoother.

Similar to Kusama, Moonriver has a relatively fast governance system with a 5-day voting period and a 2-hour staking and unstaking period.

Similarly, we expect Moonriver to become a "test center", where all projects can be deployed and tested in Kusama and the multi-chain Polkadot ecosystem to unlock new functions and gameplay. As we have seen over the past few weeks, Kusama parachains are not always stable and bugs can be discovered at any time.

Compared with Moonriver, Moonbeam is more "mature" and will launch Polkadot as a parachain in the future. Specifically, like the relationship between Kusama and Polkadot, Moonbeam will be a more stable network than Moonriver, thanks to the security of the Polkadot parachain and relay chain. Like Polkadot, Moonbeam will have a more stable governance system, although no details have been announced yet.

We expect Moonbeam to become a more "enterprise" ecosystem. Compared with Moonriver, there will be more stable and predictable projects deployed to the Moonbeam network.

As Derek mentioned in an earlier post, projects that need the "strongest financial security" will focus on Moonbeam deployments. For example, projects that need to process high-value loans will tend to be deployed on the Moonbeam network. However, the project expects more projects to maintain previous deployments across both Moonbeam and Moonriver networks.

Many people ask what types of projects would like to deploy on Moonriver and Moonbeam.

Projects can be divided into the following four types:

  • Deploy on both Moonriver and Moonbeam

  • First deployed on Moonriver, then switched to Moonbeam

  • Deployed only on Moonriver

Advantages of Moonriver

Faster is (basically) always better, and the sooner a project wants to enter the Polkadot ecosystem, the better. In this regard, Moonriver is currently an excellent deployment solution. As the Twitter big VBiz said, "The one who takes the lead in MOVR will always win."

The community owns the MOVR token, and the current performance of MOVR in the secondary market is particularly strong, so there is no pressure for VC to sell.

Even though some projects will eventually be deployed on the Moonbeam network, they will still be deployed first on the Moonriver.

Moonriver Disadvantages

Advantages of Moonbeam

"Stronger economic security" will be a big attraction for high-quality projects to be deployed on Moonbeam.

The success of Moonriver will also "anticipate" the success of Moonbeam.

Disadvantages of Moonbeam

The Polkadot parallel chain has not yet announced the specific launch time, while Moonriver has begun to rapidly expand the ecosystem. Moonriver can reach a certain maturity, which puts pressure on Moonbeam.

Recent developments in Moonriver and Moonbeam

Moonriver: In a recent talk, the team stated that Moonriver will get Gnosis multi-signature support, and more blockchain bridges and oracles will be deployed to Moonriver. Thanks to these practical tools, more projects can be listed on Moonriver. Similarly, we also expect more liquidity projects to be deployed on Moonriver.

Moonbeam

Moonbeam is an Ethereum-compatible smart contract platform on the Polkadot network that facilitates the development of natively interoperable applications. Through its Ethereum compatibility, developers are able to deploy existing Solidity smart contracts and Dapp front-ends on Moonbeam with minimal code adjustments. As a parachain on the Polkadot network, Moonbeam will also benefit from the shared security of the Polkadot relay chain and connectivity to other Polkadot-related chains. Moonbeam is developed by the PureStake team and is currently in the pre-launch stage. The mainnet is scheduled to go live in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Moonriver

Moonriver is Moonbeam's peer network designed to provide a permanent testing environment for incentivized experiments. The code of the newly launched project will be deployed to Moonriver first, and undergo a series of tests and experimental verifications in its real economic environment. After the verification is completed and passed the test, the project code can be officially deployed to Moonbeam on Polkadot.
