Many players in the currency circle have answered the call of "Huobi Customer Service".

These so-called "Huobi customer service" will invite players to join the "currency exchange group". In the group, there are not only "teachers" who bring fried coins, but also gentle customer service ladies who teach by hand.

However, this is a well-laid trap, and they are not real Huobi customer service. Scammers will never let you go without defrauding you of your assets.

This routine appeared in 2019, but it has flooded again recently. Some players said that they receive such calls almost every day.

The proliferation of these scams has exposed the seriousness of data leakage in the currency circle.

But now on the black market, some user information can be bought for only 5 cents.

01 Scam with bill

"Hi, I'm Huobi.com customer service. You are our VIP user. Now I invite you to join our VIP currency exchange group. There are professional teachers in the group to guide you to operate and make money with you."
Recently, such marketing and promotion calls have emerged in the currency circle in an endless stream. "I get this kind of call almost every day." Xiao Wang, a player in the currency circle, told Yiben Blockchain.
Once pulled into these communication groups, the "killing pig tray" scam begins.
Players are "pigs" waiting to be slaughtered, and scammers first "raise pigs"—give small favors to make players profit, guide them to invest and deposit, and then "kill pigs" to harvest all the players' assets.
In these "coin circle exchange groups", players will meet group friends of various identities. The "teacher" with the avatar in a suit and leather shoes will release daily currency price analysis and trend judgments in the group, with a cold tone. The "customer service" using the profile picture of a beautiful woman is responsible for enlivening the atmosphere in the group and guiding investors to register and deposit on the platform.
In addition, there are many "extras" in the group, who will take the initiative to ask the "teacher" for advice, or post their "records of investment income" to thank the "teacher" for helping him "make a lot of money".
In early June, "Upstream News" reported that Xiaoli, a 31-year-old female graduate student in Beijing, was cheated of 750,000 yuan in 4 days by the "killing pig" in the currency circle.
There are also reports that, except for the victims, in these "killing pig dish" investment exchange groups, everyone else is a liar.
"I was once introduced by Huobi customer service and registered with two exchanges I had never heard of - TESLA and Fbix. The customer service not only taught me to register, but also asked me to follow their operations to invest." Xiao Wang said .
He once questioned: "Why does Huobi customer service recommend other exchanges?" The customer service said: "We have a cooperative relationship with Huobi."
"These exchanges that rely on phone calls to pull people's heads are almost all scams." Sun Yuan, a blockchain researcher, told Yiben Blockchain, "Huobi customer service calls" have become their means of acquiring customers.
The first category is the typical "killing pig dish". The platform will play against the players, and directly modify the transaction data in the background after the players invest, so that the players lose money.

"In the currency circle, even if the platform does not modify the data, most retail investors will lose all their capital sooner or later." Sun Yuan said, "Even if a very small number of retail investors have made money, the platform can also prevent players from cashing out by restricting withdrawals."
The second category is an upgraded version of the "killing pig dish". The platform can not only bet against the player, but also charge a handling fee—the player is "eaten" twice in this way.
"Ninety percent of the people who claim to be Huobi customer service callers are the second type of scams," Sun Yuan pointed out.
He believes that the proliferation of such scams in the currency circle marks the rise of the "customer loss model" in the currency circle.
In the past, in traditional investment circles such as futures, foreign exchange, and precious metals, the "customer loss model" was a common scam-in this mode, the platform directly bet against users, and the "customer loss" (the money lost by customers) was the platform's income.
Sun Yuan pointed out that in recent years, investors in futures, foreign exchange, and precious metal industries have entered the currency circle one after another, and exchange owners in these industries have also opened currency circle exchanges one after another. The customer loss mode has thus become a common mode in currency exchanges.
"Not only those unknown small exchanges, but now many second- and third-tier exchanges in the currency circle have also begun to bet against retail investors, making money from customer losses." Sun Yuan said.

02 Deception Routine

How do these scams that rely on phone calls to pull people's heads work?

A blockchain survey found that the customer service pull model in the currency circle has shown a trend of corporate operation. Most of the "customer service" who pulled people's heads and the scammers who cheated later came from two companies.

Xiao A, who calls herself "Huobi Customer Service", told Yiben that she is still a college student, introduced by a classmate, and works part-time in an "Internet Marketing Company". Her daily job is to make phone calls as "Huobi.com Customer Service" to pull people into the group.

She introduced that her company is located in Chengdu and has more than a dozen employees. Every day when she goes to work, the supervisor will give her an A4 paper full of phone numbers, and ask her to make calls one by one.

"It is necessary to pull 5 orders every day, and if it is not enough, the money will be deducted. If there are more than 5 orders, you can earn 5 yuan more for each additional person you pull." She said.

The task of 5 orders per day may not seem like a lot, but it is not easy to complete. Xiao A said that most people would hang up the phone directly after hearing the words "Huobi Customer Service". In addition, some people would scold her or tease her verbally, "You chat with me first, and I will join the group."

At the end of the day, she often needs to make 500 calls to complete the task.

"Most people regard me as a liar, but I'm just a part-time phone caller." Xiao A said.

She said that her "network marketing company" was only responsible for making phone calls and pulling groups. She has no idea what will happen after pulling the group.

But at the same time, Xiao A seems to know that these "currency exchange groups" are hidden tricks.

"You help me complete the task of entering the group, and you can leave the group after staying in the group for two days. Don't believe what those people in the group say." She reminded.

In order to make others believe that he is a genuine "Huobi customer service", Xiao A also learned a set of speech skills:

When someone raises a question, she will say that she is from the Huobi branch, not the headquarters.

If the other party repeatedly questioned, she would change her words, saying that the company and Huobi are a "cooperative relationship."

In fact, Huobi is not ignorant of such scams.

In April of this year, Huobi issued an announcement, saying that Huobi has never established investment communities such as "teachers bring orders" and "guidance for currency speculation".

"Anyone who contacts users in the name of Huobi and Huobi Investment speculation, etc., can be regarded as fraudulent behavior." The announcement stated.

In addition to Huobi, another big brand in the currency circle, "Bishijie", is also a frequent target of scammers.

A Bitworld employee told a blockchain that he even received a call from someone claiming to be "Bitworld Customer Service" at work.

The other party quickly hung up the phone.

03 Data breach

Where do scammers get their phone numbers from? More and more people are confused by this.

"My friends who speculate in coins often receive such calls, but friends who don't speculate in coins have never received it," Xiao Wang said.

Obviously, the information of players in the currency circle has been leaked.

"Data leakage in the currency circle has long been rampant." Zhang Hongwen, a network security practitioner, said, "In the data black market, these data are not difficult to buy."

A seller said that he has more than 100,000 Huobi user data, and the price is only 800 US dollars. In other words, the price of each piece of data is only RMB 5 cents.

A seller said that these data come from operators intercepting information, therefore, the data dimension only has one item of phone number.

"Whether it is Huobi, or Internet platforms such as Weibo and Zhihu, they all support SMS verification code login. In this process, third-party code delivery providers and telecom operators can obtain platform user information. "Zhang Hongwen said, "These data may have been leaked in this way."

He pointed out that the data that only costs 5 cents a piece must not be first-hand. "These data may have been resold many times and flooded the currency circle."

Perhaps, this is also a major reason for the proliferation of scams in the currency circle.

For example, on May 26, some darknet users released information about the data sale of “VIP users of an exchange and Coin paying users”.

The description text of the product shows that the seller has 2,400 pieces of Coin Exchange paid user data, and the dimension is only a phone number, and the price is 50 US dollars.

The data dimension of "Xu'an Exchange" is more abundant, including the number of Bitcoin positions and monthly trading volume. There are 700 pieces of data, each with a price of 100 US dollars.

"'Xuan Exchange' is obviously Binance, and Coin Coin is a second-tier exchange in China." Sun Yuan said, "The seller claims that the data is first-hand data, so the price is more expensive."

On the dark web trading platform "Tea Horse Ancient Road", the term "blockchain data" ranks 23rd in the keyword list, even ahead of hot words such as "online loan" and "Alipay".

On this platform, some sellers are selling the user data of the currency exchange, saying that it is "real-time sale at the source". There are also buyers posting, saying that long-term acquisition of user information in the currency circle can lead to long-term cooperation.

Just recently, there have been several data leakage accidents in the currency circle.

On May 19, the digital currency lending platform BlockFi suffered a data breach. According to the official statement, hackers hacked into an employee’s mobile phone and entered the BlockFi background, obtaining the names, emails, dates of birth, transaction information, etc. of some users.

On June 2, the Japanese digital currency exchange Coincheck also suffered a data breach. The personal data of about 200 users was leaked, including names, registered addresses, birthdays, phone numbers, and KYC (identity verification information) photos.

It is self-evident where these data flow.

The pig-killing scam is prevalent in the currency circle. And the data that is easily leaked provides scammers with an excellent fraud tool.

The killing pig and its variants have become another cancer in the currency circle outside the capital market.
